BRIN – SEASIA Responds to Political, Social, Economic, and Cultural Challenges
The 4th SEASIA Biennial Conference is an event for stakeholders to discuss and seek solutions to various challenges faced by countries in Southeast Asia as an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The activity, which is held at the Le Meredian Hotel, Jakarta, on 9-11 June 2022, carries the theme Managing Disruption, Developing Resilience for a Better Southeast Asia.
Jakarta, 9 June 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred in the last two years has made Southeast Asian countries face challenges related to political, regional, socio-economic, and cultural dynamics. These challenges are also fueled by the impact of digital transformation and amplified by ongoing global trends, such as demographic change, rapid urbanization, increased international migration, and a strong dependence on digital technology.
To respond to these challenges, Southeast Asian countries are looking for solutions to all the problems that arise in each of these countries through the activity of The 4th SEASIA Biennial Conference which is held in Jakarta, 9-11 June 2022. The conference under the theme “Managing Disruption, “Developing Resilience for a Better Southeast Asia” is held by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) through its Social Sciences and Humanities Research Organization (OR IPSH) in collaboration with the SEASIA (Southeast Asia Studies in Asia) Consortium.
Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, said this conference is held as a form of collaboration in an effort to recover in the post-COVID-19 pandemic. “Broader cooperation is needed to rebuild the economy and the resilience of our society to achieve long-term sustainability,” said Handoko.
“Without cooperation and collaborative action, what happens is uncertainty that has a negative impact on our society,” he continued.
Handoko explained that this conference is part of a continuous effort to promote dialogue and cooperation with all members of the SEASIA Consortium. This effort extends to scholars and students, researchers, and activists who work on issues related to economic, social, historical, art, cultural, heritage, religion, politics, human rights, and international relations issues.
“We will investigate the challenges and prospects of Southeast Asian countries in managing disruption and developing resilience in the face of global health, climate and environment, as well as socio-economic, cultural and political development together,” he said.
As the only research institution in Indonesia, Handoko hopes that BRIN can contribute to domestic economic development in order to achieve Indonesia’s goal of becoming a developed country 2045.
Head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Organization, Ahmad Najib Burhani, said the conference is the fourth activity and becomes part of activities of the Southeast Asian consortium. “This conference activity is part of the Southeast Asia consortium, which is a consortium consisting of 13 leading educational and research institutions in Asia. This Biennial Conference activity was first held in 2015 in Kyoto, then 2017 in Bangkok, 2019 in Taiwan and 2022 in Jakarta,” said Najib.
As the organizer of the conference, Najib explained the many benefits earned BRIN, particularly for researchers. At least this event provides a great opportunity to promote BRIN internationally, especially for Southeast Asian scholars.
“This biennial event is also a very important platform for social and humanities researchers at BRIN not only to share their research results, but also to build networks and research collaborations in the future,” continued Najib.
As BRIN acts as the Executive Committee of SEASIA at this conference, according to Najib, the position and role of BRIN will be stronger and more strategic in the context of various research related to Southeast Asia, especially in encouraging research collaboration, knowledge transfer and strengthening the capacity of BRIN’s social and humanities researchers at the international level.
